Pictured here you may see some beanies; beanies have a long history at UNB and university and college tradition worldwide. The exact history of the term is unknown but may have derived from the medieval term for new students, beani, a Latinization of the Fench derisive term bec jaune for "yellow beak". It was common practice for new students to be required to wear beanies during their first week of studies so they could easily be identified by senior students for initiation and hazing. Incoming students at UNB have worn beanies from at least 1933. Yearbooks show them commonly throughout the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s until 1969 when they were no longer required, and once or twice a decade until as recently as 2004.
