Cover Description

A slouching, pale figure in a red jumpsuit and dark boots walks facing right. Appears to be male, completely bald. Another figure, also appearing male, hides behind a large leafy green plant in the right corner of the image, a weapon drawn, seeming to wait for the other to pass for an ambush. In the background are hills and a clouded horizon, cut through by a river carrying a red watercraft

Notable Details

Issue contains the story “Deadline” by Cleve Cartmill. This story is noteworthy because it described a “super bomb” that had close parallels to the atomic bomb a full 14 months before the first successful A-bomb tests. The story prompted a FBI investigation of both Cartmill and Astounding Science Fiction editor John W. Campbell. Because of the notoriety of this story, the issue is rare and highly collectible
